Is Total Wines worth the cost?

Sunday, September 21, 2008

As I was in the area, I decided to stop by a Total Wines today and see what they had.  While there, I did get into a conversation with someone, thus making a new wine friend in the process.  The one thing that I noticed was that while the store had a nice selection, it was definitely missing some items that should've been there.  The second thing was the prices on the bottles could've been anywhere from an average of $2 higher (on regular low priced wines) to $4 higher (on 375ml bottles of dessert wines that go for $12) than the prices at Canal's on Route 38 in Pennsauken.

While I am used to Total Wines being a Delaware business, this was the first time I went into one of their locations in New Jersey.  I have said to people before that prices are cheaper in Jersey than Delware and that's even with the difference in taxes, but I have seen this price difference between two different stores in Jersey and it doesn't make any sense.

While Total Wines might have a load of people on staff, and a nice and organized operation, I think that I am missing both the warmth, intimacy and lower prices than some of it's competitors.

Now, I will have to start looking at some of the other larger stores and writing my feedback.

Our Mission: The Black Winer strives to expose African Americans [and others] to wines, without the flair, stuffiness, and airs of elitism and snobbery that you get from sommeliers and high level wine enthusiasts. We believe in finding something that you like the taste of, outside of the basic brands that you have been force-fed over the years through a combination of ethnically targeted advertising, and what people in your family have historically been drinking.
