I first tasted this wine at the 2007
Philadelphia Wine Festival and was very much moved by it.
This was when I was first getting into reds, and while
there were many winners there, this meritage had a richness
and assortment of flavors that no other wine there had,
especially with it not being a port or a Madeira.
While I initially balked at the price of
close to $100 per bottle, luckily it was one that they
discounted in Pennsylvania due to the Chairman's Selection
program.
The wine itself has a flavorful aroma that
reminds me of both blackberries and something between
nutmeg and cinnamon mixed in, in just the right amounts.
The flavor continues, giving you a sense of both well
blended wines, and a hint of Caribbean spices that you
would most detect in some delectable desserts.
While the wine itself is strong, it isn't
too overpowering, and belies something akin for some
special occasions, or more if you can afford it.
