Rosenblum Cellars is my favorite zinfandel producer and
occasionally, I up the ante and splurge on a more expensive
bottle. This one lists for $40 on the company website, but
came in at a couple dollars less over at Canal's on route 70
in Marlton, NJ. And while the website recommended that this
was best with roast boar, it was just coincidence that I had
this right after having some Andouille sausage.
This wine gives you deep -- very deep -- berry, as well
as some nice exotic spices, and also wood aspects that blend
together in the most mellifluous combination. This is a
wine that would go great with anything like duck, grouse,
goose, turkey or pheasant, as well as beef, bison, venison,
rabbit, bear and/or boar.
You are immediately hit with berry mixed with some nice
oak (I'm guessing French, but I can be wrong). The berry is
not over the top, but ample enough to sate your gullet. The
wood aspect dries it out just enough, but not too much where
it's too dry for most people used to white wines. While
their website says boysenberry and cassis, I get cassis and
just the slightest bit of black cherry. I can't quite catch
the particular spice that I am tasting, but there is black
pepper and something else as well.
The color is a lovely dark purple that says the same
under the light. The weight is light, but not too light,
and easy to swallow, not lingering on your tongue too long
nor too short. The wine drops off rather fast (the flavor
profile), but you get a demure finish that lasts at least
through twenty seconds.
