I remember the first time that I had a Chenin Blanc;
where and when. I remember the first time that a Viognier
floored me. Well, this Viognier was grafted on 50 year-old
Chenin Blanc vines in 1997 and is a wicked wine... in a good
way.
Unlike most raggedy-ass Viognier wines, this lovely beast
is well tamed and full of exotic, tropical flavors. You can
taste peaches, apricots, pineapple, papaya and even a little
bit of subdued smoke in each sip or gulp, whatever you
choose. That smoke is from the oak, but it's well placed
and well developed.
The smell is not overly aromatic, staying close to the
glass and within the bowl of the glass, but it's actually
woody and floral at the same time.
This wine is great, and I would highly recommend it for
any romantic interludes and endeavors.
