It was several years ago in which I attended a lovely tasting for Sangiovese by I.E.E.M. which enlightened my eyes on this wonderful grape. One of the particular regions and styles that I instantly fell in love with is the superiore/riserva from the Emilio-Romagna region of Italy. I found this one over at the Wine and Spirits store on City [Line] Avenue (Philadelphia/Bala Cynwyd) for only $10.99 and decided to pick it up.
I can tell you that this wine is a steal! The first thing that you get it the spice of the barrels that it is aged in [for two years]. This stays in the back of your throat and takes some time to fade away, which is easily over one minute. The tannins are in the middle so that you have just a little bit of astringency, but not enough to be overly cloying, and this wine does have aspects of both nutmeg and clove. The color is a nice dark red which is neither too opaque nor too light. The nose exudes spice as well, like the faintest aspect of cinnamon mixed in with something else.
This wine is a total winner. I can't wait until payday so that I can get some more before it runs out.
